Define colon?
The colon is made up of 4 basic parts; The right colon, also called the ascending colon, is on the right side of the abdomen. It begins with the cecum that connects the colon to the small intestine, and extends upward to the transverse colon.

The sigmoid colon is the last part of the colon. It connects the left colon to the rectum.

Causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
The function of the colon is to form and produce stool within the digestive system, by removing water, salts, and nutrients.

1- Irregular bowel movements:
Contractions of the small intestine and colon may be either too strong or too weak. Thus, the food moves either too quickly or too slowly, causing diarrhea or constipation, and sometimes the two alternate.
2- Intestinal sensitivity:
People with functional colonopathy have a more sensitive gut. They feel more pain with symptoms of bloating, gas, and abdominal pain.
Increased disturbances after eating or after a specific type of food, often fast food (ready food), unhealthy food, canned food and cereals.
Diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome
The doctor diagnoses irritable bowel syndrome, when the patient has symptoms at least one day a week, over the previous 3 months. And when they occur within a period of at least 6 months.
IBS is usually diagnosed between the ages of 25 and 40. It is not uncommon for this syndrome to appear in adolescents.
What are the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome are varied and numerous, and vary from person to person. However, the most common symptoms are of 3 types:
3- Abdominal pain

Causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Not much is known about the cause of irritable bowel syndrome. In many people with IBS, their digestive system is very sensitive to many stimuli. These people may feel discomfort due to gas or intestinal spasms that others do not find bothersome. The cause may be an unhealthy diet rich in fats, or an intestinal sensitivity to certain foods, such as wheat, dairy products, grains, chocolate and fruits.
These foods contain carbohydrates that are difficult for the small intestine to absorb. Carbohydrates are fermented by bacteria in the intestines, causing gas, bloating, and cramps.
Irregular timing of food

5- Severe pain during menstruation.
6- Premenstrual syndrome.
7- Exposure to isolation and depression.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
There is no definitive treatment for the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, but tips and guidelines to relieve these symptoms, which are:
1- Eat a healthy diet and avoid foods that cause gas and diarrhea.
2- Drink plenty of water to avoid constipation. And a lot of fiber, but after reviewing the specialist doctor to determine the type and amount of fiber, because increasing fiber intake randomly, may make gas and bloating worse in some patients.
3- Regular exercise, specifically abdominal exercises, helps maintain the normal functioning of the digestive system.
5- People with IBS notice improvement if they eat frequent snacks instead of large and less frequent meals. For example, it is better to eat 5 or 6 small meals during the day, rather than 3 large meals.
6- You should eat slowly. Especially those who suffer from flatulence and gas. It is necessary to avoid grains, cabbage and foods that are difficult to digest.
7- Limit your intake of foods that are high in carbohydrates.
8- Avoid taking the artificial sweetener "Sorbitol", which is used in some foods, medicines and chewing gum, in large quantities. Fructose, a common component of fruits and some plants, should only be consumed in small amounts.
9- Eat dairy products in moderation, or those that are lactose-free.
10- A low-fat diet is beneficial for some people, especially those whose stomach empties very slowly or very quickly.
